Today we had the pleasure of having 2 high school biology students and their teacher come in to answer genetics questions we had. The kids asked some very interesting and probing questions including:
"Why did I get more genes from my mom" "Do your genes fall out if you cut yourself and bleed" "Why does your hair turn color as you get older" and my favorite..."How do you get genes from your dad when your mom is the only pregnant one" To this question, I said "Thats a great question for your parents!" Sorry parents, I just wasn't prepared to have that talk quite yet!!! Here are some pictures from our discussion: PJ day was a hit! Our entire class dressed up, (or should I say dressed down) including the teacher! We curled up and read on the carpet during Daily 5 time today, then did some fun centers with our new Unit.
We began our new unit today, which is making us all hungry during classtime!
UNIT: Happy Meal CENTRAL IDEA: The food choices we make can be influenced by culture and advertising. We will learn about food pyramids from different parts of the world How advertisements influence the food choices we make. The importance of eating healthy. And most importantly- we will be cooking some yummy foods from different cultures. **Let me know if you have a fun, semi-easy recipe you would like to share with us, so we can make it at school! This week was a wonderful example of just how much your children are growing and changing. All the 2nd grade students came out of their shells and gave such interesting speeches. They used the Fluency points we have been practicing in class and shined! Some parents came in with yummy treats which all of our risk-takers tried. I kicked off the speeches by giving a speech about my grandma, Ruth Allaire. This morning at school it was quite smokey, and the students and I needed to drink lots of water. Unfortunately the water down at the woodhouse was out, so we had to make long trips to the canteen. If you could send your child with a recyclable water bottle or canteen, it would help a lot. Especially with the hotter weather coming up soon, it is so important for your children to stay hydrated to keep their concentration levels up!!
Thanks parents! Peace Day was a great chance to talk about how we should act in and out of school. We listened to a wonderful song called Stand By Me which is filmed in many different parts of the world. After watching the song and discussing it, students decided that this song meant to always stand up for your friends and even people you don't know. Here is the song, and some pictures from Peace Day! Listening to "Stand By Me" Peace Begins With US!!!! We asked all the PYP student to use their finger prints to complete out peace sign. Doesn't it look great!!! This morning we did a lot of reading and writing, so this afternoon we decided to dance out our stress! We choose this song, of course because it goes perfectly with our Family Unit, and also because....its fun! I caught a wonderful moment today...
students working on their Mexican Cultures vocabulary, all lined up so nicely! If only every day was so organized! (I allow students to use their chairs as a desk sometimes as a kinesthetic change) |
